With heavy hearts and fond spirits, we remember Verner Lloyd Pate, who departed from this world on October 27, 2023, at the age of 91. A gentle man of strength and resilience, Verner's life was a testament to dedication, love, and the beauty of nature.
Born on October 18, 1932 in Buffalo, Texas to Jim B. "JB" Pate and Lourene (Bain) Pate, Verner overcame adversity from an early age as he was raised by his compassionate grandmother when his dear mother passed away. The values instilled in him during his upbringing shaped him into the kind-hearted person we knew and loved.
Verner spent his early years immersed in the serene landscapes of Leon County. An avid observer of wildlife his entire life, he found solace by simply being outdoors, marveling at the wonders of nature that surrounded him.
In his younger years, Verner found great joy in fishing and hunting, relishing in the thrill of the chase and the tranquility of nature's embrace. These adventures formed memories that would accompany him throughout his life.
On June 18, 1955, Verner embarked on a journey of love and companionship, as he joined hearts with Florence Neal. Together, they shared a bond that would stand the test of time, fostering a family built on love, resilience, and unity. Through the joys and sorrows, their unwavering love for each other remained steadfast, illuminating the path for future generations.
Having been raised in Leon County, Texas, Verner's life journey eventually led him to Houston, where he pursued a successful career as a plumber. With his skilled hands and unwavering dedication, he became known for his ability to fix anything that came his way, with the exception of electricity. His proficiency became a blessing to those who sought his assistance, as his expertise brought comfort and peace to many households.
Verner's roots remained firmly planted in the soil of Leon County, as he returned to his homeland upon retiring from his career as a plumber in Houston. Surrounded by the cherished memories of his youth, he found solace and contentment, embracing the simplicity and tranquility that only Leon County could offer.
Verner was preceded in death by both of his parents; wife, Florence Pate and brother, Alfred Pate.
Verner's legacy lives on through his surviving family; children, Pamela Stephenson of Humble, Verna Krottinger (Jesse) of Houston, Penny Milam (Ricky) of Palacios, Anthony Pate (Denise) of Houston, Rebecca Stokes of Buffalo and Jimmy Pate (Vickie) of Kosse; grandchildren, Shane, Ricky, Amanda, Angela, Jeffery, Stephen, Brian, Allen, Zach, Miki, Michael, Candace and Stephanie; twenty-six great-grandchildren and numerous extended family and friends. His memory will resonate within their hearts, reminding them of his wisdom, kindness, and unwavering love.
As we gather to honor Verner's life, we invite everyone to join the Pate family for a time of visitation to be held from 5 P.M. to 7 P.M., Wednesday, November 1, 2023.
