Paula Beherens, of Stewart Memorial United Methodist Church in Buffalo, will officiate the service. A graveside will be held at 3 P.M. in Holly Springs Cemetery in Van, Texas. The Hocutt family will receive friends from 6 P.M. to 8 P.M., Friday, November 23rd at the funeral home.
Gary Burl Hocutt was born February 16, 1950 in Waxahachie, Texas to Alvin Burl & Lawin (Bogel) Hocutt. He was raised in Oak Cliff, Texas and graduated high school from David W. Carter High School in Dallas, Texas. He later attended college classes at Texas A&M University.
After helping his father build his home in Palestine, Texas, Gary made the decision to move to Buffalo. This is where he met Martha Rider. They were married February 14, 2001. Gary devoted the rest of his life to making Martha happy. Whether it was the weekly flower bouquets or assisting in a project at her workplace, Gary was happy to help Martha whenever he was able. Gary’s and Martha’s love for each other was unconditional, and without any effort, both made each other better versions of themselves.
Gary worked as a cabinet maker and truly loved his job. He was also happy to lend his expert carpentry skills whenever called upon for help by anyone in the community. Additionally, Gary was benevolent in regularly providing donations to various charities and organizations. Gary always adhered to his old-fashioned values and principles and believed in helping his fellow neighbor. These acts of kindness often went unrecognized by the public, but Gary wouldn’t have had it any other way. His generous nature was a trait that Gary did not boast about and considered humility to be the best form of gratitude.
When Gary wasn’t working he enjoyed having coffee and visiting with friends at the Horse’s Mouth Bookstore and Coffee Shop. He was also a big fan of NASCAR. Many hours were spent watching his favorite drivers, Dale Earnhardt and Mark Martin make one last neck-and-neck lap around the track.
Gary passed away Monday, November 19, 2018 in Waco, Texas. He was preceded in death by both of his parents and one step-brother. Gary is survived by his loving wife, Martha Hocutt of Buffalo; sister, Paula Simmons (Joey) of Maypearl; nephew, Josh Simmons (Elizabeth); nieces, Jennifer Bullinger (Matthew) and Jodi Noll (Mario) and many great nieces and nephews. Gary is also survived by numerous extended family and friends
