Gloria Hammond, age 89, passed away peacefully on September 19, 2019 at her home in Buffalo, Texas surrounded by family. Gloria (Banks) Hammond was born November 6, 1929 in Cotton Valley, LA to Otis Lee and Adelle (Dickson) Banks. She spent most of her childhood on her grandparent’s farm in Cotton Valley Louisiana.

Gloria attended in in Bright Star, AR. She also attended Our Lady of the Lake private school in San Antonio, Texas for a few years in middle school.

She loved to travel and spent time between her home in Cotton Valley and her aunt’s house in McAllen. After retirement she enjoyed traveling with her kids and grandkids any time she could. One of her favorite trips was her cruise to Cozumel at the age of 82. She loved watching pastor Hagee on Sunday mornings and working in her flower beds.

She and her first husband, Lynn, married right after high school and they had one son. After moving to the Houston area, she met her second husband, Joe Hammond. They relocated to the Jewett Area where they raised their family. Gloria moved to Buffalo in 1973, where she made her home for 46 years.

Gloria worked in several area restaurants and never met a stranger. In her spare time, she enjoyed sewing, reading, ceramics, baking and working on genealogy.

Above all else she loved her family and was always there to take care of anything they needed. Her home was filled with photos of her children and grandchildren. Each one held a special place in her heart, and she was always ready with a story to brag on their accomplishments. She enjoyed Facebooking with her family on a regular basis and was proof that anyone could learn to use technology at any age.

Gloria was a Lutheran by Faith and a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Centerville, TX. She was a strong woman with a huge faith. Although she encountered many health obstacles, she was always ready to face the challenges head on and with determination that could move mountains. Her strength, faith and selflessness were one of the many things that her family admired about her.

Gloria was preceded in death by both of her parents; husband, Joe Hammond; daughter, Sandra Walla and grandson, Thomas Walker Lee. Her surviving family legacy include sons, Richard Lynn Quillin (Carolyn) of Rodessa, LA, Joe Allen Hammond of Lake Richland Chambers, TX and Thomas Lee Hammond (Rhonda) of Palestine, TX; daughters, Teresa Ann Hodge (Jerry) of Buffalo, TX, Karen Sue Murchison of Jewett, TX and Sharon May Hammond of Buffalo, TX and son-in-law, Ronnie Walla of Lake Limestone, TX; 20 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and 3 great, great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will include Gloria's grandsons, Billy Quillin, Brian Quillin, Jason Milligan, Keith Carter, Jimmy Hodge & Thomas Hammond, Jr.

A celebration of Gloria’s life will be held on Saturday, September 21, 2019, at 11 a.m. at Walters’ Buffalo Funeral Home, 249 Humphreys St., Buffalo, Texas 75831. Viewing 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm of Friday, September 20, 2019 at the funeral home. She will be laid to rest at Sardis Cemetery in Jewett, TX.
