James Dalton Stanton, 95, passed away June 10, 2024 in Gilmer, Upshur County, Texas. He was born March 11, 1929, in San Augustine, San Augustine County, Texas to Thomas Christopher Stanton and Anna Lela (Pitts) Stanton.
James was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Jean Stanton; sons, James D. Stanton, II and Thomas O. Stanton; grandchild, Sarah Stanton; brothers, Don T. Stanton, Maurice Stanton, an infant twin and Floyd Stanton; and sisters, Tommie Jean Stanton, Marie Coleman and Barbara Gozberk.
He is survived by his step-son, Dale (Anita) White of Sabinal; sisters, Sue Bobbitt of Pineland and Rita (Welden) Elliott of Hemphill; and daughters-in-law, Martha & Pam Stanton.
He loved the honor of being "Grandpa James" to grandchildren, James D. Stanton, III, Stephanie (Joseph) Jennings, Shelby (Tanner) Spikes, Spencer Stanton, Joshua Stanton, Caleb Stanton, and Serra Stanton; and step-grandchildren, Brandon White, Collin White, Aaron White, and Darren White. He was great-grandpa to Lorraine "Rainy" Hollister, Mildred "Millie" Jennings, Oren Jennings, Alice Stanton, and Stetson Spikes.
James was a man with an outgoing personality that never met a stranger. He possessed a strong work ethic, having worked in construction for many years and maintaining Leon County roads for many decades, many years past the average retirement age. His greatest love, however, was being a rancher taking care of his herd of cattle.
James had a great love for his country, having served in the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the US Army and loved reminiscing and sharing about his many "jumps."
James enjoyed his late retirement years spending time with family and friends, gardening, playing dominoes and had a great love of various types of food. Ice cream, any time of the day, always made him happy.
James and his late wife were dedicated church members of First Baptist Church of Buffalo. He was an avid daily reader of the Bible scriptures and had regularly attended church services and participated in church functions and activities.
James will be greatly missed by friends and family.
