Mary Margaret Fitz

Mary Margaret (Cates) Fitz, 84, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on September 22, 2017.

Mary Margaret was born on February 23, 1933, in Leon County - Buffalo, Texas, to John and Celia (Vestal) Cates. She attended Buffalo schools and graduated from Buffalo High School in 1950.

From the time she was a young girl until she married, she was a member of the Stewart Memorial United Methodist Church in Buffalo. As a young adult, she taught the Kindergarten Sunday School class. After graduating from high school, she worked as secretary for the Buffalo School system for several years. During her free time, she enjoyed sewing and became an excellent seamstress. When she married Robert Earl Fitz of Marquez, they made their home in Marquez. She later became a member of the Ephesus Baptist Church where they raised their children. One of her favorite pastimes was enjoying farm living.

When her husband, Robert Earl, passed away in 1989, she began attending the Marquez Methodist Church and became a member. Mary Margaret always said she had everything she wished for: to be a wife, a mother, and to always make her residence in Leon County. She always gave God the credit for her wonderful life and dearly loved her husband, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Earl Fitz of Marquez; parents, John and Celia Cates of Buffalo; infant brother John S. Cates; brothers James Cates and Harvey Cates of Buffalo; sister Louise Cates of Buffalo.

Survivors include: daughter, Janet Knight and husband Byron of Centerville; son, Edward Fitz of Marquez; daughter, Amy Fitz of Lake Charles, LA.

Surviving grandchildren are Kristin and husband Ricky Garcia of Centerville, Ryan Fitz and wife Viviana of Fairfield, and Ashley Fitz.

Surviving great grandchildren are Luke Garcia, Remi Fitz, Jaxton Fitz, Evan Fitz, and Gavin Fitz.

In the spring of 2016, as Mary Margaret reminisced about her younger days, she couldn’t help but remember the times that she and her sister, Louise, would go into the woods to look for wildflowers. She recalled how they could always find dogwood in bloom, wild violets, sweet williams, and wild daisies. As she reflected on the joy of those simple things, she wished others could feel the same happiness that she did as a young girl.

Funeral services for Mary Margaret Fitz will be held at 10 A.M., Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at the Walters' Buffalo Funeral Home in Buffalo, Texas. Following the service, Mrs. Fitz will be laid to rest next to her late husband, Robert Earl, in the Sardis Cemetery outside of Jewett, Texas. A public visitation will take place on Monday, September 25th at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Marquez United Methodist Church at P.O. Box 319, Marquez, Texas 77865.
