Vergil Baxter Raines, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away on September 25, 2023 in Houston, Texas following a brief stay in the hospital after experiencing several health setbacks for the past several years. Born on February 6, 1938, in Oakwood, Texas, Vergil was the son of the late Vergil Emmett and Ruby (Moore) Raines.
Vergil dedicated his entire career as a petroleum engineer to Dowell/Schlumberger, where he contributed immensely to the oil and gas industry. With a passion for his work, Vergil's expertise and commitment earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues. After many years of dedication, he retired in 1987, leaving behind a lasting legacy.
Beyond his professional achievements, Vergil's true joy in life came from his family. For sixty-five years, he was lovingly married to his devoted spouse, Nancy Raines.
Vergil was preceded in death by his father, Vergil E. Raines; mother, Ruby Moore Raines; brother-in-law, Henry "Hank" Duvall and daughter, Teresa Gaye Raines.
Surviving family includes wife, Nancy (Rampy) Raines; sister, Mara Raines Duvall; daughter, Ginger (Raines) Stone; son-in-law, Robert William Stone; granddaughter, Shelby Stone; grandson-in-law, Austyn Stoltenberg and great-granddaughter, Emilia Stoltenberg.
A graveside service to honor Vergil's life will be held at 1 P.M. on Thursday, September 28, 2023 at Wheelock Cemetery in the Flo Community of Leon County, Texas. Bro Johnny Veretto Will officiate the service.
Vergil Baxter Raines will forever be remembered as a loving husband, a devoted father, and a cherished friend. His genuine kindness, unwavering love, and remarkable legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of all who had the privilege of knowing him. He leaves behind a void that can never be filled, but his spirit and memory will continue to guide and inspire us. May he rest in eternal peace.
Arrangements are under the direction of Walters' Buffalo Funeral Home, Buffalo, Texas.
